Mbl 121 Mbl 121 (Translated from Spanish)

mbl's revolutionary "Radialstrahler" system allows our new mbl 121 monitor to conjure up a three-dimensional sound field in your listening space, just like that found in a music venue. The "Radialstrahler" concept is, in theory, simple, yet ingenious: musical instruments and voices emit sound waves in all directions – so we created a loudspeaker that radiates in all directions, not just to the front or rear, like more common designs.
The critical tweeter and midrange drivers of the mbl 121 share technology with our legendary mbl 101 and mbl 111 loudspeakers, which utilize a patented arrangement of hand-made curved stripes, or "petals," fixed vertically around an axis. A voice coil at the base and a counter bearing on the top keep the petals under tension upward and downward. When a musical impulse is transmitted from the amplifier to the speakers, the petals bend in proportion to the current and emit sound waves (this principle is also called "Bending Pulsar Driver," or B-Pulsar). The result is an outstanding three-dimensional and natural sound field, which in any direction remains undistorted, neutral, and homogenous – just like the live musical event.

In order keep the signal natural and musical, the numerous petals in the tweeter and midrange drivers are meticulously crafted of proprietary hand-made carbon-fiber materials; in the case of the tweeter, the petals are drawn from uni-directional carbon-fiber and in the midrange, they are drawn from cross-woven carbon fiber, all of which are compressed under high pressure and shape-hardened at an exact temperature. Successful installation of these ultra-thin (120 mm) petals demands absolute precision.

An important design goal in the mbl 121 was to provide all of the beauty, magic, and sheer realism of it's larger siblings, while keeping the cabinet footprint compact and elegant. To achieve this goal, the mbl 121 utilizes several unique low-frequency implementations:

1. Passive Bass Crossover Network
The mbl 121 uses a passive low-frequency crossover in order to provide:

a: Increased bass output
Typically, a compact cabinet results in reduced bass output. The passive matched crossover in the mbl 121 essentially doubles the effectiveness of the cabinet volume, which increases the overall low-frequency output. This crossover design allows the impedance reserve of the woofers to work in a push-push series connection.

b: Suppression of subsonic information
Below the tuning frequency of a vented box design, the excursion of the bass driver could take extreme dimensions, which easily could destroy it mechanically and distort its output. The mbl 121 uses a passive subsonic filter to eliminate any possibility of the lowest frequencies interfering with the driver operation, thus reducing unwanted (un-musical) distortions.

2. Psycho-Acoustically Aligned Energy Response

The mbl 121 applies Psycho-acoustic principles to the woofers with counter compensation. This is achieved by:
a: Increasing the bass group delay time
By increasing the slew rate in the bass range of the mbl 121, the group delay time is increased, resulting in extended bass impulses. This allows low-frequency information to be perceived more fully and clearly.

b: Incline of the energy curve
We calculated the gradient of the acoustic energy in the mbl 121 so that it declines with 3 dB over 2 decades towards the higher frequencies. The result is an acoustic increase, which makes the relatively-compact enclosure sound acoustically larger.

Special Features Found in the mbl 121's Bass/ Lower-Midrange Drivers:

- Bass/ lower-midrange drivers in the mbl 121 are aligned in a push-push configuration, resulting in mutual power compensation; therefore, the cabinet is not stimulated mechanically to resonate.

- Bass/ lower-midrange drivers in the mbl 121 utilize high temperature-tolerant aluminum voice coil carriers and aluminum membranes, which yield high load capacity, since the heat of the voice coil is led away to the membrane via the voice coil carrier.

- Bass/ lower-midrange drivers in the mbl 121 utilize aluminum membranes with flanged edges which provide an absolutely deformation-free membrane surface resulting in zero-loss transmission of the mechanical movement of acoustic sound pressure.

- Finish: black, silver, veneer (Satin / Piano)
- Dimensions (W x D x H): 280 x 350 x 430 mm (H = 570mm with grille).
11 x 13.5 x 17.5 inches (H = 23 inches with grille).

Mbl 1621 Mbl 1621 (Translated from Spanish)

Our CD Drive

In one of its most beautiful forms our creed is represented by MBL’s 1621 A CD drive which totally differs from the products of the mass market for CD players. The mbl 1621 A symbolizes our striving for perfection in every respect – it combines brilliant technology, perfect design and exclusive materials in brilliant workmanship.

The drive operates as interface between the musical reproduction equipment and the world outside represented by compact discs. Thus, it is the first step for perfect reproduction of music. For this reason, we indulge in the luxury of the best CD drive available on the market, the mbl 1621 A, that is equipped with a stable aluminum diecasting frame. But this would not be enough since here, too, the devil – and the difference between the most perfect and all the others – is in the nuts and bolts. Therefore, we further improve the absolutely and durably precise tracking 3 beam laser drive at some important points. Thus, to avoid vibrations, the drive is for example mounted on a sub-chassis with a weight of 4 kg: a solid block made from brass, aluminum and Terodem, spring-mounted on three points for isolation. And the highlight is the adjustment: The drive can be adjusted absolutely horizontal as it is true for very good record players.

The solid top cover made from 10 mm thick aluminum that protects the drive against sound pressure waves of the music coming from the speakers is not less complex and at least as effective as the measures mentioned above. When removing the cover for changing CDs you feel its weight and the high quality of its workmanship. Due to its unique shape and material design developed by mbl it closes the mbl 1621 A drive like a safe. To avoid resonance within the CD chamber the cover is cut three-dimensionally screw-like. Due to this shape there are no parallel surfaces between the CD and the screw-like cover.

Not only the screw shape complexly cut in the mbl works, but also the vibration absorbers on the cover axis have been conceived to avoid resonance.

In addition to this subtlety with regard to electronics and materials a true master for fault clearance is placed directly on the CD: the CD stabilizer. Being similar to and as effective as a star, it keeps the position of the CD without causing trouble itself. Not for nothing it represents an own chapter in MBL’s development history. Its shape and its composition of aluminum, magnesium, brass and a very special alloy required complex material research in our own acoustic labs. Its static weight fixing the CD on the driving disc is as exactly calculated as the dynamic mass providing for an exact starting of the CD. In combination with a precisely cut O ring the 13 fingers avoid vibrations or fluttering on the outer edge of the CD.

The handling of the stabilizer is full of joy and is not more amazing than the solid appearance of the drive which reflects the solid quality of the 30 kg device in an subtly elegant way. The 10 mm thick cover of the drive made from solid aluminum lets you have no doubts about quality – Imperturbability is a trump.

Our Sound

It almost seems to be unnecessary to mention that this never-ending truly detail-oriented research and development has of course paid for itself. MBL’s 1621 A drive sounds incredibly! Its resolution being finely differentiated and totally free of discoloring and disturbances it also gives the most critical music lover a pleasure of the senses. The violin solo enchants as clear as crystal up to the finest nuances, dry basses being as energetic as originals can be heard from the CD or voices breathe dreamily natural out of the speakers. That’s straight musical pleasure.

It’s also a pleasure to regard and feel, since its brilliant elegance and excellent finish seduce not only into listening but also into regarding and feeling its immaculate beauty, its perfection.

Guarantee of ten years for parts, labour and installation.

"If you´re heavily interested in Red Book CD, you may not know how good it can get until you audition this pricey-but-worth-it transport and DAC from MBL. If there is better CD playback, JV hasn´t heard it – and he´s heard and reviewed some mighty fine CD and SACD players. It isn´t just the magical level of musical detail – much of it previously unheard – that this combo is capable of eliciting from silver disc, nor its unusually lifelike timbres, nor the unparalleled extension, definition, and slam of its bass. It is the MBL´s overall gestalt – the analog-like taste of dimensionality and solidity that it adds to virtually every CD – that truly astonishes. No, the 1621/1611 isn´t a Walker turntable; it is darker, less delicately detailed, airy, bloomy, and 3-D than great analog playback. That said, it comes as close to LP´s virtues as any CD player JV has had in his system, with the bonuses of CD´s superior bass, sea-swell large-scale dynamics, lightning transients, and often astonishing clarity". Mbl 1611 Mbl 1611 (Translated from Spanish)

A few bits more …

… make a crucial difference, distinguishing an outstanding, conventional D/A converter from the top-grade product from our company – the mbl 1611. The days are long gone where 16 bits/44.1 kHz constituted a sound barrier for recording on digital media: Audio DVD and SACD allow a resolution of up to 24 bits at a signal bandwidth which has been doubled in size, thereby offering the kind of unadulterated, pure audio experience which has previously been the exclusive reserve of live events. The sonorous ambience of the bits and bytes is thus transformed onto the acoustic stage of absolute musical reality.

Realistic sound – Dreamlike vision: As with all MBL components, the mbl 1611 also encompasses the latest technology in a noble exterior. The highly-aesthetic design synonymous with MBL manifests itself through selected materials, lavishly crafted in our own plant according to rigorous quality controls.

Solid brass pedestals and 24-carat hard gold plating for switches and buttons are merely two of the various components of the beguiling elegance of the D/A converter mbl 1611 which satisfy the demanding standards of the high-end sector: The MBL standard.

The mbl 1611 equips you for the new media in the world of sophisticated high-end music reproduction. The multiple award-winning D version of our converter possesses not only an input receiver with 24 bits 96/192 kHz, but the digital filter and the converter itself operate according to the resolution and frequency demanded by the latest standards. Reliable examinations carried out by the AES (Audio Engineering Society) have proven that the human ear possesses a resolution capacity corresponding to a digital grading of approx. 22.5 bits.

Only a consistent data width of 24 bits, as provided by the E version of the mbl 1611, provides you the listener with access to the refined nuances of any musical genre – be it the soft piano-pianissimos from Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune”, the splendid subtleties of jazz “blue notes” or the earth-shattering opulence of straussian orchestral movements. Music lovers who, in view of the limited dynamics of older silver discs, had to constantly fear that human voices ring out of a void, for example, can now rest at ease. MBL provides the latest technology for the service of acoustic well-being, secure in the knowledge that every – absolutely every – detail can be rendered audible. Nothing remains concealed from the mbl 1611.

Even familiar works on old sound-carriers glitter with a new radiance, giving you a new listening experience, a musical revelation. CDs which have been recorded in the conventional fashion also contain information which is stored without distortion well below the digital resolution of 16 bits. This is achieved using dithering (e.g. in noise shapers) during recording and mastering. These signals can be reproduced in a similar non-distorted manner only through the high-resolution converter module in the mbl 1611.

Whoever is prepared to settle for less relinquishes nuances, forsaking the acoustic precision which transforms music into a realistic experience.

Years of research have led to the development of the D/A converter mbl 1611, a product whose technical finesse has yet to be paralleled. Needless to say, this fact is not only accounted for by the use of innovative technology.

The rigorous processing of the most exclusive components to be found on the market also ensures the high level of quality of the digital-analogue conversion. The mbl 1611 thus contains three similarly constructed, low-scatter toroidal core transformers which are magnetically shielded with M/U metal and which are insulated using sophisticated protective shield technology. They guarantee a minimum of bothersome interference by using a mains current at a maximum of constant power supply which are indispensable for non-distorted reproduction. In addition to the constantly high level of data width, the device offers a low-noise reference supply point at the D/A converter level as well as a low impedance and fast “switch capacitator” level which reproduces the scanned signal in a perfectly synchronised and non-distorted manner.

“Input poverty” is an alien term for our high-end converters. Whatever number of CD, DVD and Laserdisc players you may wish to connect, whichever standard you may favour – the mbl 1611 is equipped for all eventualities. It provides you with 10 digital inputs, 2 of which are AES/EBU, 2 x SP/DIF to Cinch, 2 x S/P-DIF to BNC, 2 x optical fibres to ST and 2 synthetic conductors to Toslink. Fans of Super Audio CD (SACD) technology have the option of fitting an SACD input. Two digital outputs offer the possibility of additional digital processing of the signals.

Two further interesting options: the variable, analogue output module in conjunction with the analogue input module (for two analogue sources, 1 x symmetrical to XLR and 1 x unsymmetrical to Cinch per channel) offer the possibility of doing without a separate pre-amplifier, thereby electing your 1611 to be the cornerstone of your system.

The selection of exclusive components, the attention to detail during crafting and the latest in technology make the mbl 1611 into a D/A converter which not only conforms with the highest standards, but conversely also sets the standard: Its stunning, dare I say incomparable depth-staggering and delight in detail unfolds above all through the harmonious interaction with other components of absolute quality – for example our mbl 1621 drive, the 9011 power amplifier or the revolutionary mbl 101E Radialstrahler. Treat yourself to the mbl 1611 and indulge it with the other high-end products from our range.

For the immaculate production of digital music worlds within your own four walls.

Guarantee of ten years for parts, labour and installation.

Mbl 9011 Mbl 9011 (Translated from Spanish)

A technical masterpiece in the service of music. This high-end treat does not boast yet unheard of measurement data; certainly not, it simply outdoes everything that was considered the “best” up until now.

The circuitry concepts developed by MBL, such as the “DPP” and “IGC” technologies, are combined here with a uniquely new circuit board design with ultra-short signal paths. Special low-induction components in the passive area make it possible to exploit the full bandwidth.

Special technical features:

- Multi-layer PCB with heavy CU planes in the output section
- Layout in Ground-plane and Eye-of-an-needle technique
- Low-induction MPC resistors and MHz-type RSH capacitors
- Super-fast ring-emitter transistors in X-crossed array
- Regulated power supply for the Class-A drive electronics
… and a few secrets that we would rather keep to ourselves.

Thanks to the uncompromising, balanced mono design, it was possible to eliminate virtually all sources of interference. Two complete power amplifiers inside the mbl 9011 keep the speaker under absolute control at all times. The input, a single balanced connector on the back, is connected in a purist direct way to the input difference amplifier using twisted 6N copper wiring.

As far as the sound is concerned, we wouldn’t dare attempt to describe or classify it; after all, perfection is difficult to put into words …

So just open your ears and listen.

Guarantee of 10 years for parts, labour and installation.

"Driven by the mbl 6010 D preamp, the massive, super-powerful, ultra-expensive mbl 9011 monoblocks are superior by a wide margin to any other solid state and, frankly, to any other tube amps JV has auditioned past or present. The ne plus ultra of front-to-back transparancy, low-level resolution, large- and small-scale dynamics, low-end extension, detail, authority (unbelievable!), and treble speed, detail, and punch, the 9011s are also blessed with georgeous tone color and a top-to-bottom liquidity that JV has never before experienced with transistors. The first amplifiers JV has heard that fully combine the signal virtues of solid-state amps (extension, resolution, speed, sock) with those of triode tube amps (liquidity, rich timbres, and very low level harmonic and dynamic detail), giving you nearly the whole note of any instrument, from starting transient to (and this is a first with solid-state) lingering decay". Mbl 101 e Mbl 101 e (Translated from Spanish)

Natural Sound

Live music is incomparable: direct, nuances, complex, but harmonic as a whole. Music sounds like it is – real. No matter if you are listening to the filigree play of violins in a concert hall or if you really feel the powerful bass at a rock music event, you always experience music as tangible part of your environment, as element of the senses coming from all sides. To experience music at the moment of its creation is a cultural and sensuous event and will therefore always have an important position in our society. And that is good.

But unfortunately, you cannot always give yourself over to music in a concert hall, you do not always have the time for row 12, seat 17 in the “Gro§e Symphonie” (large concert hall in Berlin). You would rather like to permit yourself the luxury of experiencing music, enjoying music at home in your own living space, and that as natural and harmonic as in the concert hall. This is, however, not easy – even with the most advanced reproduction technology – since this high demand poses a serious problem even for very good conventional speaker systems: In contrast to the instruments of the live event, those speakers radiate the sound only in one direction – to the front. For this reason, they can only insufficiently reproduce such round harmony, that is produced by an orchestra radiating to all sides. The ratio of direct sound (from the boxes) and indirect sound (reflected by the walls and other objects) is not balanced. This is an obvious drawback.

For us at MBL this drawback in speaker construction was a challenge 20 years ago: How must a new speaker be in order to radiate the sound – of an instrument or a voice – as it is the case in reality? In which way a balanced ratio between direct and indirect sound and thus a harmonic and real, i.e. perfect musical pleasure can be achieved?

During many years of acoustic research in cooperation with Professor Dr. Josef Sternberg and Professor Dr. Herbert Fritz (among others) of the Institut für Luft- und Raumfahrt an der Technischen Universität Berlin (institute for aeronautics and aerospace at the technical university of Berlin, Germany) we have finally developed a speaker concept that breaks through the physical limits of conventional speakers – the Radialstrahler, which we now present in its most advanced version, the mbl 101 E.

Due to its revolutionary construction the Radialstrahler is able to produce three-dimensional sound in the living room at home that corresponds to that of a concert hall. In theory, this concept is simple, but brilliant: Like a musical instrument, the Radialstrahler radiates the sound waves in all directions – and not only in one direction like other speakers.

In practice, the concept is not as easy, of course. We had to develop and process the components and the materials that create such a totally new sound adventure.

The Radialstrahler concept includes a circular vertical arrangement of lamellas around an axis for each frequency range (tweeter, midrange driver and subwoofer). On the upper side, these lamellas are firmly glued in a thrust bearing and on the lower side, they are connected to a moving coil. If a pulse of music is now transmitted from the amplifier to the speaker, these slightly bent lamellas (therefore the Radialstrahler is also called “Biegeschwinger”) are oscillated – they radiate sound waves, in this case music. The result is a sound of unusual acoustic space and realism that is absolutely free from coloring, that is neutral and homogenous.

In order to meet the high demands, especially concerning realism, the numerous lamellas being arranged around the axis in the tweeter and midrange driver are made from one of the highest-quality materials: they are manually made from carbon fiber, pressed under a high pressure and hardened at an exact temperature. The assembly of the exactly controlled components requires absolute precision in fine mechanics.

The same applies for the lamellas of the woofer, which show the lowest sound distortion, when they are manufactured from an aluminum/magnesium alloy.

With other procedures that are not less complex we optimize the sound of all three systems in order to avoid distortions, vibrations and other undesired modifications of the sound. Thus, we attach importance to a highly effective system for cooling the moving coils, so that the coils only convert a very small part of the fed energy into heat that may have an influence on the sound. For such a high pulse power like that of the Radialstrahler (2200 W), this influence may be important. The mbl 101 E still reproduces the most fast musical pulses like that of an orchestra neutrally and without any distortions, when many other speaker systems already have to give up.

In order to create a solid basis for the homogenous realism of the three Radialstrahler systems, we integrated a subwoofer into the mbl 101 E that has also been carefully developed and that substantiates the precise play in the subwoofer range. Like the tweeter, the midrange driver and the woofer the subwoofer is submitted to the objective of the overall system as a whole: the natural sound. Accordingly, it is perfectly integrated in this 4-way speaker system which is unique – not only with regard to technology.

Natural Elegance

The sound of the Radialstrahler should be just perfect, but its appearance should not be less: Our acoustical showpiece should not only be just beautiful; it should be an esthetical pleasure, making the avant-garde design justified by its functioning a statement of the senses. And we have been confirmed from many sides that we got very close to our objective.

The mbl 101 E simply lights up with natural elegance: It is modern and timeless in one, it differs in every respect from conventional speakers, but it is discreetly beautiful. It is a harmonic complement to every stylish living space without making a negative impression as musical furniture (especially as the Radialstrahler really sounds brilliantly everywhere). But whoever regards it deliberately – and which visitor would not like to do that? – will be bewitched by its appearance: even when looking at it, the manually selected materials make you feel like touching, feeling the brilliant workmanship.

The colors are perfectly harmonized. The satin-finish black color of the covering that has been manually deposited in several layers shows an interesting contrast to the corpus inside showing through; the accentuating cap underlines the value and the beauty of the speaker, thus raising the living space to nobility, also with regard to architecture.

Thus, we make high-end technology a product of classically good style, and great sound articulates with such a seducing elegance that the Radialstrahler technically and optically becomes the new version of modern pleasure, that the delight in uncompromisingly good sound becomes the way of life of most sophisticated standard.

Press Reviews

*"MBL´s stunning-looking, four-way, omnidirectional Radialstrahler References simply do it all: a treble like Maggie´s ribbons, a midrange like SoundLab´s stats, bass like Nearfield´s eight 18” subwoofers, soundstaging and coherence like Kharma´s RM 3.2s, dynamics like Avantgarde´s Trios, and a “disappearing act” second to none. To top all this off, the 101 Es have more lifelike presence than any speaker JV has heard in several decades – actually sounding “fool-you” real at select moments on select cuts – and are more convincingly stereophonic listened to off-axis than anything else around. Like the 111 Es, the 101 Es require careful room setup and treatment and, unlike the 111s, they are a bear to drive. For the ultimate in sonics (the best, overall, JV has heard in his home), you will also need the mbl 6010 D preamp and 9011 monoblock amplifiers – making for a very expensive system. That said, the 101 Es also fare quite well with much more affordable Edge, Pass, Joule, and Kharma amplification. JV´s new reference". Jonathan Valin, The Absolute Sound Magazine

*“This type of spatial illusion cannot be conveyed by conventional speakers – no classic speaker releases airy sound so naturally. The speakers reproduce strong pulses precisely, they lead symphonic attacks brilliantly and vivaciously and impart clear outlines to complicated bass courses.”
HiFi Vision

*“The speakers reproduce such a multi-dimensional sound panorama that no other speaker could reproduce in AUDIO–s audition room. When moving through the room, the acoustic pattern is not constant, but the individual instruments move always having the correct ratio to one another as if an orchestra would play between the speakers. No other speaker tested until now provides such a phenomenal all-round radiation and can be placed without any problems.”
Audio

*“Up to now, no other speaker could reproduce such a nature-related sound pattern. The definition and airiness of the speaker are really so amazing that one can find new sounds on well-known CDs again and again.”
Playtronic

*“Amazing was how easy the sound was released from the speaker and that the position of the speakers could hardly be found out. A standard was set.”
Stereoplay

*“… No smearing, no delaying tactics, blurring of the edges. With dangerous percussion, check out the musically barren but sonically thrilling Sheffield Labs drum extravaganza. The MBL handles every thwack, smack and crack with utter, nay, Germanic control. From bass drum through to frenzied Zildjians, you get thump and splash in the correct proportions. And you’ll marvel at hyperactive guitar plucking, which suggests that Joe Satriani is faster than yer average domed tweeter.”
